PHP port for Greymatter

31 Jul 2001

As I was checking out the Greymatter discussion board, I noticed that there is a
php port in the works, courtesy of Thom. And it looks like he just got his own forum running today, were you can ask questions, request features, etc. It looks very cool. I love the features, functionality, and user interface of Greymatter, but would like if it had a better archival structure. Storing the entries as 00000030.extention just doesn’t seem right. I like the idea of having it in a mySQL database. I also like that it will be in php since that is what I have been learning/using this summer as I work on Phormation. On another Greymatter note, as I was checking out the stuff mentioned above, I came across this article that talks about doing RSS and syndication stuff with Greymatter and XML. I haven’t looked into it too much, but it seems like a very cool idea.

I just stumbled across your note, and I have to ask…Why do you think the archival stuff for Greymatter should be in a MySql database? The one reason why I chose GreyMatter over several other weblog scripts is because it didn’t use the database. ASCII text files are easier to back up, and generally require nominal processing power to serve up the page once it has been created. I haven’t been doing this for a long time, so I would be interested in your perspective.

kinda agree with you grace… btw, getting a decent database at a decent cost is impossible…
