Linux Once Again

18 May 2003

It’s been almost 4 years since I first used Linux. I remember in first year when John installed Corel Linux for me and spent several hours getting the sound to work with my messed sound card. I used Linux for a while and then switched back to Windows. Since then I’ve dual-booted with Red Hat and Windows several times, but have always ended up in Windows most of the time. Linux was never quite there. Anyway, now I’ve got Red Hat 9 installed, and it seems to have everything I need for everyday use… and it actually looks pretty decent too. I’m using Gaim as my chat client and it is working better than any of the mult-chat clients I tried under Windows. Evolution is looking and working just as well as Outlook. And if I need to create a Word or Excel document I can use OpenOffice. It’s not as pollished as Microsoft Office, but I don’t used Office much, so it works for me. My browser of choice is Firebird which is the same as in Windows. One thing I don’t get is why the Linux version doesn’t automatically come with XFT support. The fonts look great with it, but horrible without.

Slowly but surely Linux is getting better for the desktop.
