Vonage Setup and Review

21 Jan 2004

So I got my Vonage stuff yesterday. It was easy to setup and I was making and receiving calls within about 10 minutes. However, when using the MSN Messenger and iChat, I was getting some strange behavior like my internet connection was being briefly dropped. I concluded that this must have to do with the vonage phone adaptor. The instructions sent with the package have the internet connection first go through the adaptor and then to the router. This is supposed to give phone/voice packets more priority over other traffic. Well even when not using the phone, Messenger was having problems. So I switch to this setup so the phone adaptor is behind the router, just like a normal computer. Then I opened up the ports of the firewall on the router to allow for the voice traffic. Everything seems good now and the people I call say that they can’t tell that it’s not a normal phone.

hey Matty, sounds something like what I need. The phone plans up here aren’t the greatest. For long distance I can only get a maximum of 10 hours a month for $20 and no upgrades so I have to pay 10 cents a minute after that, which I think will add up a bit. Plus they charge you $40 for a phone hookup, which sucks when you’re only going to disconnect it 4 months later. Oh well, that’s cool that you got that phone up and running. take care
